Milk Has Two Big Oscar Wins

'Milk' won two Oscars last night - Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. Both were such important wins for the gay community. To have this film be awarded in this way will hopefully mean even more people will take the time to see the movie and hear the message. Even if they don't they at least heard the two speeches given. Both winners commented on the LGBT communities struggle for equality. Here are the speeches.

Dustin Lance Black - Best Original Screenplay

Sean Penn - Best Actor

Moron of the Week

Utah state senator Chris Buttars has been chosen as my pick for Moron of the Week. Buttars made his comments for an upcoming documentary on Prop. 8. In this interview he refers to the "radical gay movement" as
"They're probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of."

There is much more so here are the words of the Moron of the Week

President Obama's Weekly Address

This weeks address focuses on the newly passed Economic Recovery Plan. He announces that a new website will be set up at recovery.gov that will show where all the money is going. I love this new emphasis on transparency in the government. Like President Obama says, "Ultimately this is your money. You deserve to know where it is going and how it is spent."

Domestic Partnership Registry Opens in Phoenix

Yesterday was the first day couples could register as domestic partners in Phoenix, AZ. The City Council unanimously agreed to allow same-sex and unmarried heterosexual couples to register as long as they share a residence in Phoenix.

The registry allows partner visitation rights in all hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and other health-care facilities in the city. Couples must pay a $50 fee to become registered.

10 couples were there when the offices opened. One of the first couples were Lisa Smith and Reagan Bennion who said,
"It's sad that we have to deem this a huge deal, but this is a step in the right direction. Progress is progress, and we're here to support those who made this possible."

Turnout for the day was lower than officials expected. According to the clerk's office 27 couples registered on the first day. It's hard to say if the passing of the gay marriage ban is still hanging over the gay community in Phoenix. It's hard not to feel that this is a very small consolation to be given after the huge slap in the face the state gave the LGBT community.

The first of the 27 couples that did register the first day were Phoenix Vice Mayor Tom Simplot and his partner David Smith. Simplot was a key figure in getting the registry created.

Registration will continue in the assembly room at Phoenix City Hall through Feb. 13. Registration then will be located on the 15th floor of Phoenix City Hall.

You can get more answers about the registry by looking at the Domestic Partner Registry Fact Sheet

Sacrifices to Save the Economy

2006-2007 Volkswagen New Beetle photographed i...Image via Wikipedia

Right now everyone is having to make sacrifices. Even President Obama is going to be forcing executives whose companies take big bailouts from the stimulus package to limit their salary to $500,000. Now there's a sacrifice.

My way of sacrificing is actually helping people keep their job. My laptop died over a month ago. Luckily, I bought it at Best Buy and got the service plan.

My laptop and I made a trip to see the Geek Squad. After explaining that the little blue light would come on but nothing else would happen (I know you are impressed with my detailed technical explaination), they assured me they would take good care of my laptop and even retrieve the data for me. They would need to send my laptop out for service because they didn't do what was required in house. I was told it would take about two weeks.

I retrieved my data a few days later. Unfortunately, I don't know if the recovery worked because the information is stored on DVD and my desktop doesn't have a DVD drive. But no worries I'll have my laptop back soon.

More than two weeks go by so I decide to call and check. The nice Geek Squad boy informs me that it had just been sent the day before. I explained to him that was impossible. After being put on hold he comes back and tells me it was sent AGAIN to service. Apparently, they "fixed" it but when it came back and the trusty Geek Squad checked it the laptop would not power up. I would have thought that was something that would have been obvious before leaving the service place. So I was told it would be another two weeks.

I called the other day and learned my laptop was on a truck and traveling back home. I received the call today that the Geek Squad did indeed have my laptop. FINALLY!

Oh but wait - remember I am saving the economy.

I am informed that while it does turn on, the Geek Squad ran a diagnostic and the laptop is still not working properly. The hard drive apparently doesn't work. Again, this seems like a pretty obvious thing. I ask the Geek Squad gal how many times will it get sent back before they give up and give me a new computer.
Her answer, "Four."

I was surprised that there really was an answer to this question.

So at this point I say "fix" it - find out it's not fixed - send it back - and get me a new damn computer!

After all I am helping many people keep their job and saving the economy. It's the least Best Buy can do.

Super Bowl Warm Up

I love football. I am a die hard Dallas Cowboy fan. I also happen to live in Arizona, so today I will be cheering for the Arizona Cardinals.

I also love everything about the Super Bowl. All the pre-game hoopla, the game, and especially - the commercials!

I have a few things to get everyone in the mood. The first is the PETA commercial that was too HOT for TV and could not be played during the big game. I'll let the commercial speak for itself.

The next is just a great cover of Beyonce's "Single Ladies". It's called "Steeler Ladies" and it is well written and very fun. I saw this over at Stiletto Sports. If you have not seen this blog you must.

If you want to read the lyrics hear over to "Steeler Ladies" on Stiletto Sports.
